Community Partners Go the Extra Mile

Katherine McKenzie, Ph.D., Biomedical Research Administrator and External Relations Manager

The CBCRP encourages public and advocate involvement in every facet of the program. Several California residents took up the invitation in a way we didn’t anticipate—they independently developed creative fundraising events that resulted in thousands of research and education dollars for the CBCRP.

Individuals have gone to exceptional lengths to show their support for the CBCRP. Murray and Leann Proud of Placerville hosted a party in honor of her recovery from breast cancer treatment and final round of surgery. Not only did they engage in a well-earned celebration, they also chose to support breast cancer research in the process. The Prouds raffled off several prizes, including a weekend getaway to Harvey’s Lake Tahoe, and donated all of the proceeds to the BCRP.

Brandy Brune of Redwood City and Sarah Null of Davis, unsatisfied with the distribution of funds from other walks, designed their own hike-a-thon for the CBCRP. They embarked on this extraordinary adventure in memory of Sarah’s mother, Vivian, and in honor of Brandy’s good friend, Tracey, who was diagnosed with the breast cancer at the age of 29. They solicited sponsorships from their families and friends, and completed a three day, 54 milehike in the Sierras on the northeastern border of Yosemite. In the end they nearly doubled their goal of raising $2,000 for the CBCRP.

Several businesses have gotten involved as well. Pacific Coast Producers’ Oroville Plant held a fund drive, and Russell Allen Salon in Walnut Creek hosted a benefit dinner. The Sierra Meadows Golf Ladies’ Pro-Am Golf Tournament, organized by Christina Jacobson, club pro and breast cancer survivor, designated the CBCRP as beneficiary of their event. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Division in Oakland encouraged employees to donate to the CBCRP through their Share Advantage Program. All ofthese businesses named the CBCRP as the beneficiary after noting that 95 percent of our funding is dedicated to breast cancer research and education.

We wish to thank all of our community partners for their dedication and generosity. By going the extra mile you have helped us advance our goal of developing innovative approaches for preventing, detecting, and curing breast cancer.
