WHO WE ARE
FOUNDED FROM PASSION AND NEED
In 1993, California breast cancer activists joined
forces with scientists, healthcare professionals, and
state legislators to win passage of legislation that
created the California Breast Cancer Research
Program (CBCRP).
- The CBCRP is the largest state-funded breast cancer research effort in the nation.
- In our first dozen years, we have awarded over $164 million in 672 grants to 73 institutions and community organizations throughout the state.
- Ninety-five percent of our funding goes to research and education efforts.
- There’s more work to be done.
The mission of the CBCRP is to eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities.
The California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is administered by the University of California, Office of the President. All donations are tax deductible.

SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE
SUPPORTING NEW IDEAS AND PUSHING
BOUNDARIES
We fund high-quality research for greater
impact—studies that challenge existing beliefs, look
in new directions, or incorporate new techniques or
approaches, such as:
- Individualized therapies and reliable predictors of the disease’s course
- Focus on underserved groups, such as women with disabilities who have trouble accessing breast cancer services
- Low-toxic therapeutics from natural products like broccoli, mushrooms, and grape juice
We’re leading a coordinated, statewide effort to examine:
- The role of the environment and lifestyle in breast cancer
- The reasons why some people bear a greater burden of the disease
TRAINING FOR THE FUTURE
We support young researchers while they finish
their training under a mentor’s supervision. Their
talent and imagination lead us down creative paths of
investigation.
SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY
We seek the best science that will lead to progress
in eliminating breast cancer. We have built a
nationally recognized peer review system with
expert scientific and advocate reviewers from
around the country and fair but rigorous standards
for judging scientific excellence and innovation.
COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
INVOLVING ADVOCATES AND
COMMUNITIES
The CBCRP was created from the energy, wisdom,
and dreams of the women and men affected by
breast cancer.
Honoring that vision, advocates are involved at every level of our program. Their participation reminds us that breakthroughs are not meant to languish in scientific journals, but instead should be leveraged into practical use and greater impact against the disease.
ADVANCING RESEARCH THROUGH
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
We help communities collaborate with experienced
investigators and actively participate in research
about issues that concern them. Previous
collaborations have resulted in:
- Improving access to services
- Reducing side effects of treatment
- Improving patients’ quality of life and their ability to cope with the disease
INFORMING THE
PUBLIC
We announce our progress,
solicit feedback, and
encourage public involvement
through publications,
meetings, and our website.
We make sure that our
research results can be
understood by a wider
audience, so that the answers
can be translated quickly into
the hands of the people who
need them.
