Stakeholder Meetings to Set Breast Cancer Research Agenda in California
March 8, 2007—Oakland, CA—During late March and early April, the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) will be hosting meetings in Ukiah, Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Francisco for advocates, healthcare providers, researchers, and others to address the environmental causes of breast cancer and the unequal burden of the disease. These events are open to all, and registration is free. Two teleconferences will be held in April for those who are unable to attend the in-person meetings.
These stakeholder meetings will give area residents the opportunity to tell CBCRP how to invest $18 million for the Special Research Initiatives. The CBCRP will provide a review of scientific highlights in environmental causes of breast cancer and disparities, then open a discussion to identify promising research topics and/or approaches to increase knowledge about and create solutions in these areas.
The meetings are co-sponsored by the following organizations: Breast Cancer Action, Breast Cancer Fund, California Black Women’s Health Project, California Health Collaborative, Cancer Resource Center of Mendocino, Commonweal, Health Education Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility—Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area Chapters, UC Davis Cancer Center, UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Zero Breast Cancer
The vision of the CBCRP Special Research Initiatives is to identify and support research strategies that both increase knowledge about and create solutions to the environmental causes of breast cancer and the unequal burden of the disease. The CBCRP has set aside $18 million to push breast cancer research forward in these two related areas.

The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program is to eliminate
breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration
in the California scientific and lay communities.
Created by the State Legislature in 1993, the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is the largest state-funded breast cancer research program in the nation and is administered by the University of California, Office of the President. To date, the CBCRP has awarded 725 grants to 89 scientific institutions and community entities, totaling more than $174 million for research in California to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer. Grants from the CBCRP fill gaps not traditionally funded by other research programs to jump-start new areas of investigation that push the boundaries of research and foster new collaborations.
