Innovative Breast Cancer Research Funded By State Taxpayers

Members of the advocacy group, Marin Breast Cancer Watch, partnered with Dr. Margaret Wrensch of University of California, San Francisco, and applied for a Community Research Collaboration grant from the CBCRP to study the high breast cancer rate in Marin County. Results of their study have been reported in the San Francisco Chronicle and other journals.
But by far the biggest difference seen was in alcohol consumption, with women who had at least two drinks a day being diagnosed with breast cancer at more than twice the rate of those who drank less. At three drinks a day, the risk rose almost fourfold.

The CBCRP
Funded since 1994 through the tobacco tax, voluntary tax check-off on personal income tax forms, and individual contributions, the CBCRP has generated more than $115 million for 452 grants at 62 institutions throughout the state. Grants are awarded by the CBCRP to California scientists and community researchers to find better ways to prevent, treat and cure breast cancer. The California program is the largest state-funded breast cancer research effort in the nation and is administered by the University of California, Office of the President.
